A milling cutter is a rotating tool with one or more cutter teeth used for milling. During work, each cutter tooth is cut off the allowance of the workpiece intermittently in turn. Milling cutters are mainly used to process planes, steps, grooves, forming surfaces and cutting off workpieces on milling machines.

Eight commonly used types of milling cutters:

1. Cylindrical milling cutter

It is used for machining flat surfaces on horizontal milling machines. The cutter teeth are distributed on the circumference of the milling cutter, and are divided into straight teeth and spiral teeth according to the tooth shape. According to the number of teeth, there are two types: coarse teeth and fine teeth. The number of spiral teeth coarse teeth milling cutter is small, the cutter tooth strength is high, and the chip holding space is large, which is suitable for rough machining; Fine-tooth milling cutters are suitable for finishing.

2. Face milling cutter

Also known as disc milling cutter, it is used for machining planes on vertical milling machines, end milling machines or gantry milling machines, and there are cutter teeth on the end face and circumference, as well as coarse teeth and fine teeth. There are three types of structures: monolithic, toothed and indexable.

3. End mills

It is used for processing grooves and step surfaces, etc., and the cutter teeth are on the circumferential and end faces, and cannot be fed along the axial direction when working. When the end mill has an end tooth that passes through the center, it can be fed axially.

4. Three-sided and side milling cutter

It is used to machine various grooves and step surfaces, and there are cutter teeth on both sides and circumference.

5. Angle milling cutter

It is used to mill grooves at a certain angle, and there are two types of single angle and double angle milling cutters.

6. a saw blade milling cutter

It is used for machining deep grooves and parting workpieces, and there are more cutter teeth on its circumference. In order to reduce friction during milling, there is a secondary declination angle of 15′~1° on both sides of the cutter teeth. In addition, there are keyway milling cutters, dovetail milling cutters, T-slot milling cutters, and various forming milling cutters, among others.

7. T-shaped milling cutter

It is used to mill T-slots.

8. a sharp-tooth milling cutter

A narrow cutting strip is ground on the flank face to create a relief angle, which has a high life due to the reasonable cutting angle. The back of the tooth of the sharp-tooth milling cutter is available in three forms: straight line, curved and polyline. Straight tooth backs are often used for finishing milling cutters with fine teeth. The curved and polygonal tooth backs have better tooth strength and can withstand heavier cutting loads, and are often used for coarse tooth milling cutters
